New York City couple Ivonne and David recently started wearing Fitbit fitness trackers in the hope that the devices would help them stay active and keep them accountable for reaching their fitness goals. They became a bit confused when they saw that Ivonne’s tracker recorded a surprisingly high resting heart rate, and wondered if there was a problem with the device. David turned to Reddit for help, and it turns out that Ivonne’s increased heart rate is actually good news—the couple are expecting a baby.
David posted on Reddit’s Fitbit forum asking if anyone else had experienced a similar situation.

Ivonne’s Fitbit showed that her heart rate was quite high for her activity level, sometimes up to 110 beats per minute.
According to the American Heart Association, the average resting heart rate is around 60-100 beats a minute. A helpful Redditor asked if Ivonne might be stressed or possibly pregnant. And bingo: It turned out to be the latter.
The couple had started trying for a baby.
David and Ivonne, who wish to keep their last name private, told BuzzFeed that they had been trying to conceive for a few months, but had no idea that an increased heart rate could be a sign of pregnancy.
“I thought was something was defective in the machine,” David said.
Ivonne took a home pregnancy test to confirm the good news.
Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., told BuzzFeed that pregnant women can experience an increased heart rate, but this is typically during the third trimester. She suspects that Ivonne’s high heart rate is linked to another symptom of pregnancy, an increased body temperature.
“My hunch, if I had to bet why her [heart rate] was up, it was that her temperature was up,” Minkin said.
David went back to Reddit to share the couple’s happy update, and promised that the story was for real.
